Make it an Event… Or it’ll Keep Calling…

“He'll keep calling me, he'll keep calling me until I come over. He'll make me feel guilty. This is uh... This is ridiculous, ok I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go.” - Cameron Frye, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”

Cravings. Like Ferris harassed Cameron, once the craving calls you know it probably won’t go away any time soon. Like a persistent poke calling you to the pantry or the freezer for the snacks you said you bought for someone else or wouldn’t have again so soon. I get it!

We’ll never know why Cameron didn’t just unplug his phone. Likewise, as much as possible, maybe we don’t bring crav-a-licious foods in the house in the first place? You can’t answer their call so easily if they’re not there. Ferris didn’t have a car, he couldn’t just show up at the Frye house; likewise, there’s no way my beloved Cherry Garcia pint will just show up at my door. Don’t make it so easy to indulge.

Trying to make better choices doesn’t mean a life of deprivation - maybe you can have “the thing.” Just keep a healthy distance from it. Want some ice cream? Go get it. Eat it. Enjoy it. Invite a friend, get some fresh air, try a new place, and leave it there.

Make it an “event,” a slight inconvenience, so that it doesn’t take root as a habit.
