Tricks in Your Treats?

Have I mentioned that I love my patients? Sometimes I hear about whacky stuff they’ve heard or seen and sometimes I hear about some legitimate and scary concerns.

This blog is inspired by the latter. Earlier this week, one of my clients emailed me a link she came across. It was particularly relative to her as we’ve been on weight management in a setting of peri-menopause and hormone replacement, and I noticed a few lab markers that concerned me re: prediabetes.

What she sent was a Consumer Reports article that raised concern over her protein shake of choice, Fairlife’s Core Power High Protein Milk Shake Chocolate (plastic). Now she’s back to making her own protein shake in the morning since the cost of her health isn’t worth the convenience. I applauded her for being her own advocate with this information.

I’ve heard of phtalates before, but this information raised their threat-level in my book and put them on my radar as a regular additive to investigate with my patients. Because of their effect on our hormones, phthalates are considered “endocrine disruptors.”

Even minor disruptions in hormone levels can contribute to an increased risk of several health problems, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, birth defects, premature birth, neurodevelopmental disorders, and infertility.”

Every. Single. Patient. Every one of them, tends to have these conditions or have risk of them.

Take a look at the information for yourself and see just how many of these things are in your pantry or common in your diet. Some changes may need to take place and if you need help, you know who to call! (Me, of course.)

Spooky, right?! Happy Halloween!
